Fun Friday: Rick Santorum quotes

So the psychobilly nutjob Olympics, also known as the GOP presidential primary is down to a two man race.  So I figured for fun Friday I’d give you a deeper look at one of the men at the top, former Republican Senator from Pennsylvania Rick Santorum.

First of course, if you haven’t before, check out the Urban Dictionary entry for Santorum

On contraception:

“One of the things I will talk about, that no president has talked about before, is I think the dangers of contraception in this country…. Many of the Christian faith have said, well, that’s okay, contraception is okay. It’s not okay. It’s a license to do things in a sexual realm that is counter to how things are supposed to be.”Rick Santorum

The best part of this quote on education is that the speech made by Obama actually suggested the exact same thing Mr. Frothy suggested:

”President Obama wants everybody in America to go to college. What a snob … Oh, I understand why he wants you to go to college. He wants to remake you in his image.”Rick Santorum, speaking to a Tea Party group in Michigan (February 2012)

On the speech JFK made to show why Catholic’s like Santorum should be considered for president:

“Earlier in my political career, I had the opportunity to read the speech, and I almost threw up.”Rick Santorum, on JFK’s 1960 speech about the importance of separation of church and state (October 2011)

Uhhhh Whaaat??

“The question is — and this is what Barack Obama didn’t want to answer — is that human life a person under the Constitution? And Barack Obama says no. Well if that person — human life is not a person, then — I find it almost remarkable for a black man to say, ‘We’re going to decide who are people and who are not people.’”Rick Santorum, CNS News interview (January 2011)

Maybe Rick should take a history class from Professor Gingrich

“The idea that the Crusades and the fight of Christendom against Islam is somehow an aggression on our part is absolutely anti-historical. And that is what the perception is by the American Left who hates Christendom. … What I’m talking about is onward American soldiers. What we’re talking about are core American values.”Rick Santorum, campaigning for president in South Carolina (February 2011)

Do you care more about cheap goods from China or the lives of monks?

I very often am given a hard time by people who come into my office to tell me about some tragedy in the world and expect me to react more than I do.  The conclusion they typically draw from this is that I’m not an empathetic person, they’re wrong.  The fact is I grew up in a poor town, I’ve lived in Appalachia, I’ve traveled in the Mississippi Delta, in Brazil, China, Tibet and Nepal.  I’ve seen some of the earth shattering poverty that exists in this world.  I understand how many people die each day in our world, even how many children, from ridiculously curable diseases, from lack of food and clean water or medications that would cost pennies.  The number of people who die daily from dysentery, basically people dying from severe diarrhea is horrifying.  So the fact is the disaster of the day that makes it into the news headlines is only the tip of the iceberg and were I to allow myself to openly grieve for what I know happens every single day, I’d be a useless basket case.

Occasionally though there is something that breaks through the wall I have to keep those emotions behind, particularly when it is generally ignored by the rest of reality.  While we are daily subjected to 20 plus hours a day of Newt Gingrich being a whiny bitch because Romney is beating him, or who Sarah Palin might endorse for president, we ignore much more serious matters.

Would it surprise you to hear that today, a third Tibetan Buddhist monk has burned himself alive in the last three days!  He’s the fifteenth monk to do that over the last year, how much news coverage of this have you seen?  These monks are undertaking this sacrifice in protest of the ongoing occupation of Tibet and the suppression of their religion.  I have traveled in China and Tibet, I know many Chinese, they are not bad people but the country buys into the government propaganda concerning China’s “rights” to Tibet.  I have seen with my own eyes the ruins of temples, hospitals and schools that were destroyed when China “liberated” Tibet in the 1949 invasion and cultural revolution.  The Chinese have even tried to co-opt the Tibetan Buddhist religion by abducting the duly selected Panchen Lama and replacing him with a fraud, as well as the well-known exile of the Dalai Lama.  I cringed with disgust when I toured the holiest sites in Lhasa, Tibet and saw little communist minders in their suits telling the monks what to do.

I wonder if the American media or Americans themselves would so easily ignore this being done to Christians in a Christian country, the hypocrisy in our society at times sickens me.  One immolation in Tunisia set off the entire Arab Spring, we care about that, the Middle East is the area that makes it possible for us to buy cheap gas, unfortunately for Tibetans they can’t offer us the same and so we can’t afford to care apparently.  Cheap gas and cheap Chinese products mean more to Americans than the occupation and oppression of a peaceful people and their religion.  Shame on us, shame on all of us.

Well, Herman Cain has dropped out of the race for the Republican presidential nomination race.  This action will absolutely cement Gingrich as the party machine, right-wing candidate of choice for Republicans and conservatives.  As we’ve talked about before here that will surely draw the target squarely on the head of Newt Gingrich.  However, since the Tea Party and the vocal right of the party hate Mitt Romney I think this really opens up a path to the nomination for Gingrich.  The really ironic thing is that Cain is being taken down by the family values crowd for having one marital affair, which is actually Newt Gingrich’s primary dating strategy.

I hear lots of noise about how Mitt Romney is the establishment candidate, but let’s face it, conservatives are running the Republican Party and Romney is just not conservative enough for them.  So Newt becomes the defacto conservative flag carrier and soon to be Republican nominee.  To steal the old Lotto motto, you have to be in it to win it, if Newt is in the election and Europe melts down and the economy stays beaten and slow or in even in decline, Obama could lose to him.

So, let the hypocrisy begin.  The Republican Party, family values, conservative value protector in our country, the party being pushed by the Tea Party to weed out the Washington insiders will support a man who has NO credibility in a discussion of any sort of family values, is a total Washington insider, and who while out of office makes money almost solely based on his inside the beltway Washington political influence.  Everything the right, conservatives, Republicans and the Tea Party say they abhor.  Once again we are quickly finding politics as usual in Washington, with neither party having any true values or credibility.

So in the game of revolving nut job of the month in the GOP Presidential Nomination race it looks like it’s Newt’s turn.  First it was Michelle “pray the gay away, HPV vaccine gives you retardation” Bachmann.  Then we moved on to the big guns of Rick “what’s wrong with a huntin camp called Niggerhead, just three things 1,2, uh….” Perry.  No fear though we’ve got former pizza chairman, Herman “let’s electrocute some mexis, what’s wrong with a little head” Cain up next, oh wait, not any more.

So now we’re on to the Newtster, the big gun, the man who led the 1994 Republican Revolution, you know, and then went to work as “not a lobbyist” for Freddie Mac.  That’s ok, don’t worry about that one little glitch, hell Republicans love that get elected then go to work for big business and then come back to government.  That’s the Darth Cheney kickin it with Haliburton blueprint.  So finally, we have someone who’s a real Republican to support, not that stick in the mud, Obamacare originating Romney.   What could a bastion of the American political system and a good family values conservative like Gingrich, who took down that immoral bastard Bill Clinton, have that could cause him any problems what so ever?

Oh wait….

Family and moral values are the key thing all conservatives bring up when they talk about Bill Clinton, they can’t argue with his policies, the economy under his watch or the fact that he left office with a budget surplus, so they attack his moral character and say he didn’t deserve to be president because of it.   That was the hallmark of what Gingrich protected America from.

Oh wait…

Gingrich who married his high school math teacher, served her divorce papers while she was recovering from cancer surgery.

But it’s ok, because he had already proposed marriage to his second wife.  It really is ok she was the love of his life and we all get the soul mate thing and they lived a happy moral life for ever after.

Oh wait…

While married to her Gingrich carried on a 6 year affair with a congressional aid, is there an HR department for Congress, and proposed to her, wife number 3 prior to even filing for divorce from wife number 2.

But have faith, we all know that any good conservative would throw out their core values to beat Obama, Machiavelli was a conservative right?

Unless you’ve been living under a rock you know that the GOP big wigs and money people have been begging New Jersey Governor Chris Christie to run for president.  I guess the main reason they want him is because the current cast of clowns is highly unelectable, but very entertaining.  Given that the current field includes Michele “holy cow is she serious”, “oh it’s ok we’ll pray the gay away” Bachman, Mitt “yeah the boring Mormon guy” Romney, and Governor Rick “you think Bush was nuts you ain’t seen nuthin” Perry and Herman “The Godfather” Cain former CEO of Godfather pizza, I kind of get why the money people might be looking for someone else to run in 2012.

Given Obama has the worst economy in decades and the poll numbers to prove it, how sad is it that your party is still looking if you’re running for president.  I think somewhere there must be a pool taking bets on which candidate commits suicide first, my money, were I to bet would be on Newt “sorry we forgot you’re running” Gingrich.

This all leads to cries for the candidacy of Chris Christie, a really likeable, not so nutty, plain speaking Republican a man whose word you can count on, a man who stands for something and stands behind his positions.  His position on running for president of course is best summed up at the following link:

http://www.politico.com/news/stories/0911/64493.html

The clip above shows Christie saying no, again and again, including his question of “do I have to commit suicide in order for people to believe me?”

At this moment, I have a lot of respect for Chris Christie I can respect a man who makes a decision and stands behind it.  Of course the news all day is that he’s now considering running.  If he runs, he must lose, how can a man who stands so strongly behind the word no, turn around and run, and have the respect of anyone enough to win.  But hell, I gave up on thinking logic and honor meant anything in politics a long time ago.

So Newt Gingrich, shortly after announcing his candidacy for president also explained that Obama can’t win in a fair election.  He believes because Obama is a sitting president and raising huge amounts of money that he can’t lose.  Nothing like prepping your concession speech before you even get the nomination.

Donald Trump and Mike Huckabee have both bowed out of the election so the gallery of nut jobs that might be running for president is quickly thinning down.  At this point it’s the Gingrich – Paul show with a potential run by Tea Party darling Michele Bachmann or perhaps a late run by dark horse candidate Sarah Palin, although much like Huckabee I think she’s enjoying that Fox News paycheck a little too much to run.

I am really going to miss that Donald Trump isn’t running, I mean seriously, who else is going to personify crazy in this election.  Sure Gingrich, the hypocrite who was cheating on his wife while trying to fry Clinton for doing the same, has confessed his sins on Christian Television and will certainly provide us with a few good gaffs during the race.  But really, no Palin, no Trump this might end up being a very boring presidential campaign.

So the field of potential Republican candidates or as I call them, the nest of cuckoos, gets ever more interesting.  Between Sarah “fight like a girl Palin” looking out over Russia or Michelle “the president is not our side” Bachmann rallying Tea partiers the circus is certainly in town.  However I think the most interesting aspect of this group at this point is that among the party of “Family Values” Newt Gingrich and Donald Trump currently have 30% of the party vote.

Really, the same party that has spent the last 30 years blasting gays for immorality, talking about the moral turpitude of America and particularly liberals is considering voting for Trump or Gingrich?

Trump has five children by three wives and has made public statements about how great sex was with his mistress and was in favor of abortion:

Gingrich has multiple marriages and is rumored to have had multiple affairs during his “illustrious” career.

What I think this shows particularly in Trump’s case is that Republicans are more interested in hating President Obama then they are in the potential governance ability or the morals of their candidates.  It’s sad that American Politics is now based on hate, not the good of the people.
