The Apocalypse Clock is not an original idea; it is totally and completely stolen from an old idea, The Doomsday Clock. The Doomsday Clock was created in 1947 by the Bulletin of the Atomic Scientists at the University of Chicago as a way to discuss the perils of atomic war. They have in modern times adjusted their clock to look at not just atomic war but any type of global catastrophe including global climate change or threats from new technological developments such as nanotechnology.

At www.dystopiantimes.com the Apocalypse Clock, looks at something a little bit different. We aren’t looking necessary at some major global disaster; although we include those as well, but what we are looking at is the likelihood that society as we now know it will disintegrate into disorder creating a dystopian time.  The clock is a simple device; the closer to midnight, the more likely an event or events are to occur to send us into a dystopian spiral. We see a large number of possibilities for this to happen, not just the standard apocalyptic event. Of course if we are to have a nuclear war with the Russians, a global outbreak of a vicious disease like Ebola or H5N1, a comet strike from outer space in New York or another world war then dystopian times are likely to occur. However there are more subtle ways into which we may fall into dystopian times.

Many of the more subtle ways that society can collapse come from a series of dominoes falling and tipping each other over. For example, were a nuclear war to erupt between India and Pakistan, an event that at times has been close to occurring, this could trigger a number of other dominoes. The fallout from the war could spread into China causing large-scale health issues across the country. This in turn could cause a massive slow down in the Chinese economy, without a strong Chinese economy the US would have few options to sell its debt and there would be a serious impact to trade balance as one of our major markets would be depressed. This significant drop in the US economy could trigger a world-wide depression.

More likely what could trigger dystopian times are a series of unrelated events. For instance a combination of a terrorist event in Saudi Arabia significantly disrupting oil production, in combination with a major hurricane in the Southeastern Coast of the United States and a regional conflict breaking out between Israel and Egypt could have a negative synergistic effect upon each other and drive the world into a global crisis that could lead to the dissolution of society as we know it.
The point of the Apocalypse Clock is to gauge how close we are to one of these type of events. For reference, the clock typically sits at 11:55 which represents the typical stresses occurring in our world at any given time. Unrest in the Baltics, tension between Iran and Israel and Iran and the West, and the ever-present threat of a significant terrorist event utilizing a nuclear weapon are all current tensions on our society. As tensions increase on the world the clock creeps toward midnight, so our goal at the Dystopian Times is to keep you posted on the events in the world that impact the clock at http://www.dystopiantimes.com/apocalypse-clock

Is the end near?

It must be, I saw a guy carrying a sign saying that very thing the other day, the end is near.  Funny he looked a bit like Kareem Abdul-Jabbar, which is a little inside joke to anyone who’s ever seen The Stand.  I don’t believe the end is near in the sense of prophecy or the Book of Revelations End Time beliefs.  As much as people on Fox News may be claiming that President Obama is bringing on the End Times, I think in reality they just need to readjust their tin foil hats.  However you can access what was said at the link below:

In fact although there are plenty of ways in which the world might end quickly more than likely the end of society as we know it will come through a succession of events that domino together to bring down our economic systems which will lead to social anarchy and the dissolution of our society.  Not an easy thing to occur and quite honestly the odds are a bit low but were the right set of events to domino together, well, quite literally all hell could break loose.  The link below sets out a series of possible events that could lead to the end of the world:

One of the ways we don’t expect it to end has recently been dealt with here:

A nice discussion of the domino theory can be found on a new website, www.dystopiantimes.com there is a graphic and link on the upper left-hand corner of the site that shows how close we are to midnight, the Apocalypse.   The clock postings track back through time so you need to go back to the first post to get the full description and a read about the domino theory but it is worth a look and can be found specifically at:  http://www.dystopiantimes.com/apocalypse-clock

A disturbing trend is that the clock has been getting progressively closer to midnight and there is currently a lot of instability in the financial markets and politics of the world.  Although we may be coming to the end of the Gulf of Mexico BP Oil spill we are still dealing with:  significantly high tensions on the Korean Peninsula; tensions over the Iranian nuclear program; an ongoing two-front war in Afghanistan and Iraq; and finally the specter of a double-dip recession.

I’ll leave it to each of the readers of this post to determine how close we are to the edge and would recommend you check out the following and ask yourself the question, are you ready for dystopian times?

A story has been floating around the internet recently, written by Terrence Aym, that references Gregory Riskin’s theory that several times over the course of the history of the world, explosive releases of methane gas from under the ocean have caused mass extinctions.  This theory is currently being debated in the scientific community particularly amongst geologists.  According to Aym, the recent events taking place in the Gulf of Mexico, may have triggered an irreversible, cascading geological Apocalypse that will culminate with the first mass extinction of life on Earth in many millions of years.”

Aym further discusses the signs that would be evidence of this cataclysmic event which would include:  a splitting and cracking of the sea floor; a rise in the level of the sea floor; and massive venting of methane and other gasses.  According to Aym, ALL OF THESE ARE HAPPENING!

You can find Aym’s story at:

http://www.helium.com/items/1882339-doomsday-how-bp-gulf-disaster-may-have-triggered-a-world-killing-event

Were this to actually occur what would really happen?  According to Ryskin’s theory the explosive release of the methane would cause a massive sea floor collapse which would trigger a giant tsunami that would significantly inundate coastal zones potentially around the world.  Secondly, as the methane entered the atmosphere, methane/water vapor clouds would form that would actually self-ignite causing worldwide fire storms.  In the end, were this event to actually occur we are talking about the end of society as we know it and for any human survivors the beginning of Dystopian Times!

So, should you be terrified right now?  Should you be suddenly investing in gas masks and fire suppression systems?  Should you say the hell with it, spend out the limits of your credit cards and have the world’s last greatest orgy?  Well the Libertarian in me won’t allow me to tell you what to do, but here are a few things to think about.

First off, Aym claims that all of the signs of a massive methane release have been demonstrated including fracturing of the sea floor, this is a rumor that has been floating around the net and is mainly attributed to comments made by Dr. Anatoly Sagalevitch which were debunked in this blog after we talked to Dr. Sagalevitch, you can read more about this at:

http://zdeaconblue.wordpress.com/2010/06/26/anatoly-sagalevitch-comments-on-bp-oil-crisis-in-the-gulf-of-mexico/

Secondly Aym asserts that the sea floor is rising, which he gets from reports that have ”filtered in” but yet he quotes no one specific, which has to raise some doubts about the validity of this statement.  Additionally, Aym tells us, “Most disturbing of all: Methane levels in the water are now calculated as being almost one million times higher than normal.”   He is quoting a Reuters article by Julie Steenhuysen where they do say they found concentrations in some places one million times the background concentration, however the article goes on to say that in other places they found much lower concentrations and they don’t know way.  Also, were the entire gulf being flooded with methane at the levels suggested by Mr. Aym, then the oxygen concentrations would be severely reduced.  While the researchers found some places where oxygen levels were 30% lower than normal, they also found areas with normal levels of oxygen.  So it would appear that there isn’t a massive methane bubble in the gulf at this time.  You can read the article for yourself at:

http://www.reuters.com/article/idUSN2221822720100622

Finally, as with the comments  attributed to Dr. Sagalevitch, someone actually did the smart thing and actually contacted Dr. Gregory Ryskin to ask him what he thinks?  Well folks, he doesn’t think it’s even a possibility given his theory actually deals with completely different methane compounds then the ones being released into the Gulf of Mexico.  So the guy who wrote the theory that all of the fuss is being made about doesn’t support Mr. Aym, and you can read about this at:

http://www.businessinsider.com/gregory-ryskin-methane-2010-7

So at the end of the day is Terrence Aym just another tin foil hat lunatic trying to scare everyone to death for his own sick amusement, I doubt it.  Sadly I think the real issue a serious issue that our society faces, a lack of science education.  It is understandable that Mr. Aym could become terrified having been exposed to Ryskin’s theory, (probably on the History Channel special MegaDisasters), and then reading what would seem like those same things occurring in the Gulf of Mexico.  Unfortunately, any digging and reasoned thinking shows us clearly that we are not on the edge of a global methane bubble disaster.  Dystopian times might be coming folks, but not from this.
