My State of the Union Speech

So tonight the president made his state of the union speech, this morning I had a vision of what I might do in the same situation, it would go a little something like this.  The first thing I would do as I approached the podium would be to turn off the teleprompter, then:

Hell o everyone,

The reason I turned off the teleprompter is because although there was a very nice speech written for me tonight, a speech full of the normal platitudes of office, nice things to say about each party, bold statements about what we’ll do this year, lots of mentions about how amazing our country is, in fact that speech is a bunch of bullshit.  Why?  Well mostly because none of you in our government actually give a shit about the American people.  Let’s face it, you all have one allegiance and that is to the re-election party.  The only Americans that you care about are the ones who can finance your campaigns or get you re-elected.

You have become caricatures of yourselves, pandering puppets to the most extreme wings of your parties because those elements are the ones that can get you past your primary elections.  Of course to do that you have to spout positions that appeal to no one but your base, this is a center-right country on most issues but you pretend that it is alternately a bastion of liberal morals, or a den of conservative closed mindedness.   You, all of you, who so consistently condemn Islamic extremists have become conservative or liberal extremists.

There is a lot of good with our country; in general people are good and kind, even if they don’t always want to think very deeply or very much.  The United States does a lot of good in this world, we support countries that are less fortunate than we are, we try to create peace and support democracy which as self-centered as that is seems to be a good thing.

But we are self-centered and much of what we do, regardless of what we say is in our own self-interest, you see, we are a narcissistic nation.  We believe we are better than everyone else; we have a great term for it, American Exceptionalism.  We believe that our form of government, our religion, our values, the way we see the world is right and unless you believe what we believe you are inherently wrong or evil.

We are not a peaceful nation, but we are not warlike either, not usually.  But recently Islamic extremists violated all that we hold sacred; they had the audacity to kill Americans in America.  We used the deaths of those nearly 3000 people to drive us to war in Afghanistan, we decided to drive out the Taliban, remove them from power and kill them because they gave shelter to our enemy.  Then Saddam Hussein outsmarted our president, no major achievement there, but he also outsmarted all of our so-called intelligence agencies as well.  So we decided to go to war in Iraq as well.  We avenged the deaths of Americans by driving the Taliban out of power, killing a lot of them, and a lot of innocents as well.  We got our former ally Saddam Hussein executed and killed a lot of Iraqis, a lot of terrorists, jihadists and children as well.  In the end we’ve changed nothing permanently in Afghanistan, no invading force ever has.  We’ve changed Iraq, maybe for the better and maybe we’ve unified Iraq and Iran in a way they never could have been before.  We killed Osama Bin Laden and have seriously disrupted Al Qaeda everywhere we could find them, no matter what their nationality including American citizens.  Those we haven’t killed we’ve locked up indefinitely in a foreign country, tortured some, and undoubtedly killed some others.

But what have we really gained from our wars?  As of September 30, 2012 we have spent 1.38 trillion dollars on the wars.  This debt, along with a lack of our government being responsible, or Wall Street remotely caring about anyone but their pocketbooks, has led us into the greatest economic downturn since the great depression.  Over this period of time more than 2.6 million Americans have slipped into poverty and my friends poverty kills.  How many lives have been lost here at home to finance our wars that we are fighting to avenge the deaths of people here in America?  To this point we have lost over 5,000 soldiers in combat in the wars, more disturbingly for the last two years we have lost more soldiers to suicide than combat.  Additionally we have over 47,000 American soldiers who have been wounded, many coming home without limbs, traumatic brain injury and post traumatic stress disorder.  This is the sacrifice we made to avenge 3,000 kills by madmen and to find imaginary weapons of mass destruction.  What we’ve sacrificed in goodwill and how many new terrorists we’ve created due to the massive levels of civilian deaths in Iraq and Afghanistan remains to be seen.  According to Wikipedia there are as many as 150,000 civilian deaths between these two countries in our wars.

America, tonight, I suggest we make a change, that we try to be more civil, more peaceful, that we do some really radical things.  First, that we try to look at things from other people’s perspectives not just our own, or our own party’s or our political base, that we actually try to govern instead of just trying to get re-elected.  Let’s actually look at America with a long-term perspective, what do we need to do now, that will pay dividends over the next 20 years instead of what dividends we can pay by the next election.  I’m talking about leadership and vision, you know, the things people actually expect from their political leaders and so rarely get.  Maybe if we employ these two characteristics we might just solve some of the problems we have and actually become as great a nation as we claim to be on the radio and on the talk shows.

Congress, in case your record low approval rating doesn’t resonate with you, let me be clear, you SUCK!

We are living in historic times, some of the worst economic times in almost a century, we’re at a crossroads environmentally, peak oil and other energy issues, people are in the street protesting the economic inequity in our society and what pressing action has congress taken to handle these tough issues, oh that’s right they passed a bill reversing healthy school lunches and declaring pizza a vegetable, don’t worry those obese kids are just future insulin customers for big pharma.  A friend of mine just back from France saw a sign on a theater that said American Style seating, curious she asked her hosts, oh they said, “the seats are wider.”  That’s right we have become the fat ass joke of the world, thanks Congress for helping our children.

But it’s ok right, because even if the super committee failed there is a sequestration a process by which a series of automatic cuts would kick in to make up for what an overly partisan committee couldn’t do.  Oh, the cuts don’t kick in until 2013, conveniently after the election in 2012, Doh!

This breaking news, congress already starts discussing how to get rid of sequestration process.

To quote Jon Stewart, “Congress, this is why people hate you.”

I’m not too thrilled with Obama either at the moment. So, our economy sucks, I think we all understand this as we look around and see friends, family and co-workers unemployed and struggling to make ends meet. The economy has killed possibility for a lot of people, without the opportunity to sell their homes, seniors are unable to downsize their expenses and many people can’t find work somewhere else when they own a home here they can’t sell. It is budget season in Washington DC and the same old, stupid budget wrangling is going on. The President softball pitches his budget where he totally ignores the big entitlement programs which everyone knows have to be impacted in order to reduce the deficit. The Republicans attack him for not proposing cuts to those programs but they ignored the budget commission report that said to do exactly that. Instead the house goes out and attacks projects funded by Nancy Pelosi, punishment I guess for her doing exactly the same things they do when they are in charge and that makes them both wrong. When this “new wave” of senators and representatives were voted in during the last election there was lots of talk about doing things differently in congress, just like when Obama was elected well, that hasn’t happened. There will be another chance to show that they are still at least sane. A vote is coming up on the debt ceiling, if we don’t extend the ceiling we’ll trash our credit rating. Why you ask? Well we will exceed our current debt ceiling because of budget mandates we’ve already created. So eventually we will have to up the debt ceiling, this does not prevent us from serious cost cutting in the future and bringing down the deficit. So in the end, shutting down the government and ruining America’s credit, which is what not extending the ceiling will do, is nothing but a political stunt, with negative consequences for all of us.

I want to start this post by introducing you to the equivalent of radical Islam living right here in the United States.  The world appropriately looks down on Al Qaeda and radical clerics because they take a beautiful peaceful religion and turn it into a brutal, hateful mechanism of pain.  I have heard people who denigrate Muslims paint the entire religion of Islam with a broad brush due to the actions of this minority.  I wonder if those same folks paint Christianity the same way when they hear about the actions of the Westboro Baptist Church of Topeka, Kansas.  These are the people who proclaim in the name of the lord to hate homosexuals and to show their hate, they picket the funerals of homosexuals or any funeral or event they can somehow link to homosexuality.   Here is a link to the Wikipedia site about the group:

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Westboro_Baptist_Church

This group is nuts but also in my opinion wholly insincere, what this group is really about is getting attention for this group.  They regularly picket that bastion of homosexual lifestyle, Kansas City Chiefs home games, the NFL is a lot of things positive and negative but a big gay pride festival it is not.  This group claims to have an annual travel budget of $200,000 and that money must come from donations and I say shame on anyone contributing to this hate group.

So the Westboro Baptist Church has announced it will protest at the funeral of the nine-year old girl who was shot in Tucson earlier this week that targeted Congresswoman Giffords.  In watching CNN today the network appropriately reached out to the church to get a statement from them, it is fair to hear both sides of the story.  In full character the church responded with a hateful rant including accusations about everyone including the little girl.  I think the Westboro Baptist Church is a collection of the most hateful Christians in America and if there is a Christian God, I’m quite sure he has a one-way ticket to Hell punched for these cretins.

As someone with a Libertarian bent, and a strong believer in the freedom the constitution guarantees, I will wait and see what the Supreme Court says this spring about whether or not this type of speech can be banned.  It worries me on some level to ban any speech that does not cause direct physical injury, the cliché screaming fire in a crowded theater.  The infliction of emotional harm is a much stickier issue and the one that the Supreme Court is facing and it will be interesting to see what they say.  Regardless, you are scum if you picket the funeral of a nine-year old girl for any reason!

Happily, the people of Arizona are fighting back against the nut jobs like people have done on many other occasions.  People have conducted anti-protests against the Westboro church ever since the Matthew Shepard funeral in Wyoming in 1998.  The way they do this is to wear giant angel wings and use these to block the view of the protestors by the mourners.  The image below comes from the Portland Independent Media Center at:

Counter-protest Angels

Finally today I have a huge problem with what the nuts of the Arizona legislature are doing now.  They are rushing to pass a bill today to keep the protestors at some set distance away from any funeral.  They are waiving rules and are setting records in getting this law done and signed in one day.  Let’s be clear, their intent is to be commended, as I’ve said picketing a little girl’s funeral is despicable.  However, this church has been picketing military funerals for years and so once again today I ask the question why is congress so special?  Does the Arizona legislature only care about the mourning of families if they get killed standing nearby a congresswoman but not if they were killed in the line of duty in the military?  Or is it that they only care about their citizens when the media is watching?  I think the government of Arizona has shown in the last two years that it is completely off the rails.

Politicians on both side of the aisle stood up after the recent election and publicly said, “we hear you.”  They claim they heard the message the American people sent them, apparently according to their most recent actions what they heard was the following:

Do not help out the first responders who while helping to clean up the 9/11 site became ill:

To hell with those people who are on unemployment and can’t find a job, obviously they’re just lazy:

http://www.thestatecolumn.com/blog/2010/12/congressmen-unite-opposing-unemployment-extension-tax-cut-bill

Either continue the Bush tax cuts for the wealthy or don’t give them to anyone:

http://www.cnn.com/2010/POLITICS/12/09/tax.plan/index.html?hpt=T1

It is truly sad and amazing that our government really doesn’t give a flying shit about our country, but is instead more interested in playing the typical Washington political games.

This week I’ve been hearing a lot of politicians and talking heads saying that the people have spoken and they want…  As a matter of fact I’ve actually heard one say, “The American people are not afraid of gridlock.”  Today the Republicans in the senate sent a letter saying that they will not work on any other legislation until congress agreed to pass a bill continuing the Bush tax cuts for not just the middle class but the wealthy as well.  They also essentially said in an op-ed piece today in the Washington Post that people did not vote for cooperation in the last election.  You can read the op-ed at the link below:

http://news.yahoo.com/s/ap/20101201/ap_on_go_co/us_senate_republicans

So I guess what Washington and the Republicans think we want in Washington is gridlock and political games and not real results.  Well listen up you damn clowns, what the American people want are for you to stop stealing our tax money in the form of your salaries and actually work!!!  So the Republicans won’t work on anything but restoring the Bush tax cuts or a spending bill to keep the government working.  So until that happens, what will you be doing, sitting around chatting on Facebook?  Maybe sending elicit texts to pages, hanging out in men’s rooms and tapping your feet  or having sex with interns?  Seriously, where can I get a job where I can say, hey until we work on this particular project I’m not doing anything, just pay me to sit on my ass and collect a check until I get the project I want.  My God these idiots actually think we want them to not work until the end of January when they return from their Christmas break.

No matter what your political bent is, I can’t imagine anyone doesn’t want the United States Government to ratify the Start nuclear treaty with the Russians.  I mean this does radical things like creating a more stable system of verification so we actually know where all of the nuclear material is located.  Hey if we are so damn worried about terrorists getting a hold of the materials to make a dirty bomb, this is a great way to stop them and know what material is actually out there and missing.

So my question to Congress is this, why do you want the terrorists to win?  I’m sick of hearing how weak the so-called “liberal” Democrats are on terrorism and now here the Republicans have a great opportunity to shore up our national defense in regard to terrorism and what do they do?  Tell us that we voted for them to do nothing and go on vacation.

And if my word isn’t good on this maybe a Republican, four star general, former Secretary of State has a little more credibility on this issue:

So what if I told you that your congressional representative said and/or believed the following:

“entitlement programs (are) built to make government our God”  and this is a “violation of the First Commandment”

 http://www.lasvegassun.com/news/2010/aug/06/angles-view-rooted-biblical-law/

That first we should transition out of having a Social Security program, oh wait now that I won the nomination, Social Security should be a lock box.

Nevada scribe Sharron Angle believes that the color black is satanic! Or at least she used to before her campaign advisers started telling her to appear more tolerant. Senator Harry Reid also is satanic, which is why he’s making t-shirts which mock Angle for once campaigning against black high-school football jerseys full of Devil Power.

This whole incident stems from Angle telling a football coach how the evil spirits contained inside black jerseys would make the team lose their game and their souls.

Yes Nevada, congratulations because of rampant anti-government sentiments right now the idiot who made all of the comments and statements above maybe be your next congressional representative, and they say craps is a gamble!

Just as much as almost anyone else in America I’m sick of politicians whose sole focus seems to be getting re-elected and keeping their power base.  Also, although they don’t make huge amounts of money, it always seems that Washington politicians have plenty of greenbacks.  So every few years along comes a potential third-party movement and we all get a little bit excited.  It happened with Ross Perot and Jesse Ventura and it seemed to be happening with the Tea Party movement.  On its face, the Tea Party movement sounds like a great idea.  Who would disagree with smaller and less intrusive government, more transparency and lower taxes?  Not me!  So as people got fed up with the standard one-size fits all, overly partisan regulars in congress they started to organize.  It was I believe a genuine grass-roots organization at its formation.

However, as politicos on the right saw opportunity, they moved in and started trying to orchestrate how the Tea Party could benefit the very folks that they were fed up with.  Then of course fringe movements get caught on film at a couple of rallies, a regional leader and spokesperson makes a total ass of himself nationally, than Glenn Beck gets involved and there you have it, game over.  Although the Tea Party had some early election success, it seems after today’s primary election results that whatever influence they had has disappeared.

So, consider this my eulogy for the Tea Party, a great idea, a rising star who like most hollywood starlet wannabes and political third parties in America, shot to glory but burned out before it had an impact.

The link below is the Wikipedia entry for the Tea Party:

The link below relays the story about Tea Party official Mark Williams making a total ass of himself:

And finally a link discussing how the Tea Party couldn’t take out the biggest Republican target in a primary, John McCain.
